With millions of skincare products on the market and a multitude of recommended rules, and routines to follow, finding the right regime for your skin can be quite a challenge.

From blackheads to blemishes, here’s everything you need to know about your skin.

HOW CAN I TELL WHAT MY SKIN TYPE IS?

So in general there are four main skin types. There is normal, dry, oily and combination. One of the simplest ways to test what type of skin you have is to wash your face with a gentle cleanser, and then assess the quality of your bare skin about two to three hours later. If you are crying out for moisture you have dry skin, if your skin is flaky in some parts and oilier in others that would be combination skin.

HOW MANY STEPS SHOULD MY SKINCARE REGIME HAVE?

The Ideal routine should have four elements to it. Cleanse, treat, hydrate and protect. So start with cleansing twice a day, so morning and night. Then you want to follow that with a treatment product that contains an active ingredient. After that, during the day obviously you want to apply sunscreen to protect. You can also layer in an eye cream and the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is quite a nice one, although I do quite often forget my eye cream layer.

WHAT SKINCARE REGIME WOULD YOU SUGGEST FOR ADULT BLEMISH PRONE SKIN?

I really like the Kiehl’s range, Breakout Control Targeted Blemish Spot Treatment; these contain Salicylic Acid and Sulpha, which help unclog pores and combat acne-causing bacteria. If you have oilier skin the Blue Herbal range is nice, there is a toner, wash and a moisturiser. For patients with more cystic or hormonal stubborn acne especially in women aged 25-35 I recommend seeing a dermatologist, because this is a very difficult type of acne to treat. It can be difficult to minimise it with just products alone.

WHAT IS THE ONE SKINCARE STEP I SHOULD NEVER SKIP?

So I am either torn between sun protections or cleansing but overall I would say do not skip cleansing and that is because applying your products to your face that is covered in build-up and grime from the day isn’t going to be anywhere near as effective as if you put is on a freshly washed face. You need a blank canvas to work on.

WHAT CAUSES BLACKHEADS?

It is interesting because some people think that it is dirt in there, but it is not, it is Keratin, which is a protein that makes up your skin. When that Keratin is exposed to oxygen, because the pore is open, it oxidises and turns black.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TACKLE THEM?

Gentle exfoliation is key. I like the Rare Earth Range from Kiehl’s, especially the Deep Pore Cleansing Masque. Applying the masque, once or twice a week can really help to exfoliate. Clarisonic brushes are also very effective and these can be used in combination with some of the Kiehl’s exfoliating cleansers. This includes the Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser and then the Clearly Corrective Purifying Foaming Cleanser.

WHAT IS THE BEST PRODUCT TO TACKLE PIGMENTATION?

You can definitely improve pigmentation. The main thing is that daily sunscreen is necessary for anyone who has pigmentation problems. You can spend an absolute fortune on products and treatments for pigmentations, but if you are not preventing it in the first place with sun protection you are just going to be back at square one. I really like the Kiehl’s actively correcting and purifying BB cream as a daily sunscreen. It is lightweight and has a mild tint, which is nice. Then the Clearly Corrective Dark Spots Solution is great for those who already have pigmentation and are trying to actively treat it. It contains vitamin c and P&E extract. (Feelunique)
